Once the capital of a royal principality, now the winter capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the entry point to this beautiful state and base for a pilgrimage to the famous temple of Vaishno Devi and the other little shrines that dot this area. Bahu fort, Amar Mahal Palace and most Sacred Vaishno Devi Temple are the must see places.
Valley of Kashmir :
Set in the lap of Himalayas towering to 18,000 feet with the sinuous Jhelum river Kashmir is referred as “PARADISE” on earth. SRINAGAR is located in the heart of Kashmir Valley and is spread on both sides of Jhelum River. Srinagar is famous for its beautiful lakes- the Dal, the Nagin and the Anchar with its deep blue waters, encircled by a ring of green trees.

In Spring, Gulmarg lives up to its name , which means “Meadow of flowers” ; its a large upland meaows 52 km southwest of Srinagar. In summer, the place is packed with daytrippers from Srinagar giving the place a busy air out of keeping with its other-wise tranquil surroundings -for some great winter, Gulmarg is India’s major ski resort. The road to Gulmarg spectacularly climbs up from the valley through pine forest.
A cluster of buildings strung-out along the highway, Sonamarg is the last town of Interst on the raod to Ladhakh. Its name means meadow of Gold, and it sits in a gorgeous location in the cleft of a sweeping wooded valley. In happier times Sonamarg was popular with trekkers. Its still possible to do day walks, but take heed of the current security situation before setting out. Sonamarg is currently home to Kashmir’s largest army base.
Leh – Ladakh :
the northern-most district of Kashmir, in the rain shadow of the Himalayan ranges is distinctly different with a vast cold desert, where the snow-fed streams provide the main source of water for habitation and cultivation. Leh, its capital, once a major link on the “Silk Route” is located in a fertile valley that has several spectacular Buddhist monasteries viz Alchi Gompa, Hemis Gompa, Thikse Monastery, Shey Palace, Leh Palace, stok Palace.
